What do you write for?  A blog, your business, social media, an email?  Writing is a creative way to convey your message and communicate both fact and opinion to readers. Utilized in almost every profession, writing is an integral part of the way we communicate as individuals. In the marketing world, writing is a skill that needs to be mastered in order to achieve success, and the way content is consumed is constantly evolving.

How can you stay ahead of the curve? By crafting a strategy that will make your message stand out. Let’s get started!

1. Determine the demographics of your target audience.

Demographics include age, gender, ethnicity and location. These are the clear facts about who the audience is and help to determine the best tone and language for content. Writing content for men in Ohio should be tailored in a completely different manner than writing content for college students in Florida.

2. Is the content fact or fiction?

In addition to considering demographics when writing, it is also important to consider fact vs. fiction. Writing a research article with hard facts is completely different than writing an opinion-based article with little research required. Do you want your users to view this content as a resource or do you want to challenge them to form an opinion about something? By answering this question, you are one step closer to placing the targeted message in front of your audience.

3. What is the goal of this message?

What is the goal of writing for this particular audience? Whether it be to achieve trust or a sale, it is important to determine what the end goal is. By answering this question, a fitting call to action can be constructed, and this brings me to my last point.

4. Have a specific call to action.

This is the most important step! What should readers feel compelled to do? What do you want them to do? Here is the chance to urge your audience to respond and make a choice based on the information presented. This is the end goal of the entire process.

We live in a fast-paced world and the way information is distributed and consumed is constantly changing. By tailoring a message for a specific audience, the chances that the information will be accurately conveyed are increased. In a time where people have to sift through layers of photos, ads and words, writing a clear concise message will cut through the clutter and resonate with readers.
